Precinct 14 – Oakley – County Delegate Candidate Statements

Amber Nelson

I am a lifelong Summit County resident and have been a delegate for Oakley for the past several years. I am passionate about our elected officials listening to the people they represent and working in the best interest of all of our citizens. I ran my own business for 13 years, and am now employed by two of our great local non-profits. Many personal experiences through work and volunteer board positions have shown me what true leadership from elected government officials entails, and what gets in the way of effective governing from those individuals. For county council, I am supporting specific candidates and if you would like to discuss this with me, please contact me at (435) 901-3159 or amber.nelson@gmail.com

Thomas Smart

I have been a Summit County resident for over 35 years and am currently serving my second term on the Oakley City Council, where I have been extremely active in the Weber River Corridor Project, protecting land and opening up a trail system throughout the city.   The Summit County Council has been extremely supportive of these efforts and I have put my name in to support Roger Armstrong.  Jill Fellow seems excellent, however, she has only been in Summit County two years.

With Kim Carson vacating her seat, there will clearly be a void, however two excellent candidates with considerable experience on the planning commission have filed.  Having talked to many trusted voices, the feedback has been universal that either Malena Stevens or Canice Hart would be outstanding.   Malena has been endorsed by Kim Carson (who also endorses Armstrong) and that carries a lot of weight with me.  Clearly she has a bright future in Summit County politics.   Most people I have talked to believe that Canice has great people skills,  business acumen and is perhaps more prepared to serve on the Council.  Although I don’t believe in voting specifically based on gender, I believe that it is preferable to also have a female perspective.   That is a verbose way of saying I haven’t made up my mind yet on that seat, but promise to continue to seriously research both candidates before casting a vote.  Frankly, I wish we could vote to abolish caucus’s and hold primary elections a much more democratic system.

I am a four year Oakley resident and on staff at Park City Municipal. I’m supportive of Malena Stevens and Roger Armstrong to ensure continuity and diversity on the Summit County Council. Please reach out to me with any questions, 505.681.0991.
