Coalville, UT — September 7, 2025 — The Summit County Democratic Party will convene a special nominating convention on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Ledges Conference Center in Coalville to select a Democratic nominee to fill the vacancy in the office of Summit County Sheriff.
The vacancy was created by the retirement of Sheriff Frank Smith on September 5, 2025. Under Utah law, the Summit County Democratic Party has 30 days to submit a nominee to the Summit County Council, who will appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Sheriff Smith’s term, ending December 31, 2026090625 Letter re Sheriff Vacancy.
Call for Candidates
The Party invites qualified Democratic candidates to apply. To be considered, applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Submissions should be emailed to Rory Swensen, Party Chair, at chair@scdems.org.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must meet the legal qualifications for County Sheriff under Utah Code, including:
- U.S. citizenship and Summit County voter registration.
- Residency in Summit County for at least one year prior to the election.
- Current Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or waiver eligibility.
- Compliance with statutory requirements regarding felony convictions.

Public Access
The convention is open to the public. Accredited delegates of the Summit County Democratic Party will cast votes to select the nominee.
